Jean Twenge pt. 2

Jean M. Twenge wrote a book called iGen, which was about how iGens function differently from the other generations before them. Like the iGens mostly invest their time and energy towards their smartphone, they are less likely to socialize face to face with friends, and socially awkward. There is a quote that describes it. According to Twenge, “ I’ve identified ten important trends shaping iGen’ers and ultimately, all of us: In No Hurry, Internet, In person no more, Insecure, Irreligious, Insulated but not intrinsic, Income insecurity, Indefinite, Inclusive, and Independent.” That quote made me reflect back to my years in middle school and high school. I would rarely see any conversion in some parts of a group. They would mostly have their phones out during break and lunch and will not speak to each other. If they did, it is small talk. Then some people at my high school would not talk to anyone, so they would be on their phone and would not worry about anything else.

Reading that quote made me feel good because what Twenge described about iGens is true for most people, but with me, I am a social butterfly. I can talk to anyone without having second thoughts of how they think or feel about me. I can text too, but I prefer face to face because I can come up with good conversations. Texting for me is like small talk or just a way for contact when I have something in my mind that I need to share. I chose this as a golden line because it gave me a better understanding of how iGens.
