Lost Connections #2

Lost Connections chapters 7-10 had interesting explanations of depression can be formed and spread out like a virus. Like the people who were obese were depressed because of losing their weight and the differences between doing the things we like versus doing things we do not like but need it. I found those interesting parts to read because of how opposite the thinking I had for obese people and diferences between things we like doing and hate doing but have to do it. But there is a couple of sentences that caught my attention. It was, “It’s hard to describe what depression and acute anxiety feel like. They are such d’s orientating states that they seem to escape language.”(pg.129) I felt both confused and interested. I was interested in learning how chapters 7-10 function because of how the opposite things that they are doing to themselves make them happy. Like I would like to know more about why the obese get depressed from losing so much weight.

I also felt confused because I questioned how depression is expressed. When I read, “They are such d’s orientating states that seem to escape language” I kind of figured it might have been trying to say that depression is like a foriegn language, no one who does not speak that language will not understand it until they learn it themselves. I feel like depression could be studied as if it were like an experiment. Scientists could notice the different patterns of certain peoples depression and figure out how to cure it. However, some people prefer to solve how to cure their own depression and that also works. I chose this golden line because I felt like it spoke the truth towards society in a psychological way.
